Curator's note

Periyar National Park, tucked in the rain‑soaked folds of Idukki, is a tiger‑and‑elephant sanctuary that feels less like a park and more like a wilderness that remembers you. Arrive in the early morning to catch the boat safari on Periyar Lake at 0600‑0730; the mist lifts just enough to see a lone bull elephant splay at the water’s edge, while a sleepy tiger may sigh on a bank you’ll never locate. Skip the crowded “eco‑tour” jeep rides that hug the perimeter after 1100 – the heat stalls the wildlife and the guide’s spiel becomes a droning lullaby. Stay at the heritage resort near the lake (the old British bungalow is decent, though overpriced) or camp at the forest‑adjacent homestays in Marayoor for better night sounds. The best trek is the 4 km Periyar Tiger Trail from Mettupatty, which rewards patience with a glimpse of gaur or a shy dhole. Visit in December–February when the monsoon has retreated and the forest is lush but the humidity is tolerable; avoid July–September – the rains turn the tracks into mud‑filled rivers and the boat is cancelled. Two days is honest: one for sunrise lake, one for trek and a night understory walk.
