Pelling Stupa 2

Built to mark something the locals still argue about.

Curator's note

Pelling Stupa 2 sits perched on a rocky outcrop above the town, a lone white dome that locals still argue over – some say it commemorates a forgotten Buddhist king, others a 14th‑century treaty with the Lepchas – and the debate adds a thin veil of mystique to an otherwise under‑whelming spot. The best time to visit is early morning, when the first light gilds the sunrise‑lit Sikkimese ridge and the crowds are limited to a handful of trekkers fumbling with selfie sticks; a cup of chai from the tea‑stall on the winding path to the gate gives you a perch to watch the town wake. Skip the over‑priced “guided meditation” that starts at 10 am; the chants are recorded and the price includes a souvenir mat you’ll never use. If you linger, head down to the nearby Sanga Choeling Monastery for a more authentic prayer hall, then swing back up to the stupa at sunset – the glow off the surrounding pine forest is the only reason to stay past daylight. Two hours is sufficient; any longer feels like a pilgrimage to a monument that was never meant to be a tourist draw. Accommodation in Pelling itself is cheap and functional – the Hotel Sikkim Garden offers clean rooms and a rooftop view that eclipses the stupa’s modest charm.

Tips
