Curator's note

Pashan Lake, the 12‑km‑out‑of‑Pune relic of a British water‑works, is a damp, brackish stretch that mostly succeeds as a jogging‑track and a reluctant bird‑watching spot rather than a scenic oasis; the water is murky from unchecked runoff, the surrounding concrete barricades feel more like a municipal dump than a park, and the occasional fisherman in a rusted rowboat provides the only colour. If you must go, aim for early winter (late November to early February) when the heat is tolerable and the migratory ducks from the Ramnadi make brief appearances at the northern barrage; a sunrise stroll along the narrow footpath near the Governor’s House offers a rare, almost dignified view of the lake’s silhouette against the Sahyadri foothills. Stay in Pune’s Camp area or Kalyani Nagar for easy access by rickshaw or a short drive; avoid the crowded suburb of Baner on weekend evenings when the lake’s fringe becomes a noisy market of street food stalls selling pani puri and chai that pollute both air and water. Skip the ‘photogenic’ Instagram spots at the south‑west jetty – the view is blocked by a grey cement wall and the water is too polluted for any genuine lake‑lovers. Instead, bring a reusable bottle, a pair of binoculars for the occasional kingfisher, and a willingness to accept that Pashan’s charm lies more in its raw, unvarnished reality than in any curated aesthetic.
