Curator's note

Pandavula Gutta, the lone geo‑heritage badge of Telangana, sits a solitary 55 km southeast of Warangal near the sleepy hamlet of Kothapally, and it is less a tourist magnet than a geological curiosity for those who tolerate dust and the occasional cow‑stampede on the single‑lane tar. The limestone outcrop, speckled with wind‑carved caves that locals swear were once the Pandavas’ hide‑outs, is most rewarding in the early morning when the sun paints the boulders amber and the forest‑edge tea‑vendors are still huddled around a dying fire. Reach it via the Regonda‑Kothapally road – a patchwork of potholes that will test any suspension – and park in the modest, government‑run eco‑camp at the base; the cabins are functional, not fancy, but the night chorus of nightjars and the distant hum of a diesel generator provide a strangely comforting backdrop. A short, steep trek leads to the main cavern, where you can peer at the stalactite‑laden roof and the carved stone steps that look half‑natural, half‑myth. Skip the overpriced guide who claims the site is “the heart of Indian mythology” – the plaques at the entry already do a fine job – but do hire a local porter if you plan a midday hike; the heat in May–June climbs to intolerable levels and the trail becomes a sauna. November to February is the only sensible window, and two days is honest: one for the walk and a sunrise snap, another for a lazy afternoon of tea at the nearby Srisailam tea stall before heading back to Warangal.
