Hoshangabad
Hoshangabad, officially Narmadapuram, is a city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It serves as the headquarters of both Hoshangabad district and Narmadapuram division. It is located in central India, on the south bank of the Narmada River. Hoshangabad is 76.7 km (47.7 mi)…
Hoshangabad, now officially Narmadapuram, sits on the south bank of the Narmada like a forgotten lay‑over between Bhopal and the Bundelkhand plateau, and that is precisely why it survives on the dull side of the Madhya Pradesh itinerary. The only reason to swing a train here is the riverfront promenade at Triveni Ghat at dawn – the water is cooler than the city’s dusty streets, the sunrise hits the ghats with a pink that makes the occasional pilgrim look less tired – and then you can wander the colonial‑era railway station, a functional relic that still sells peppermint tea to the odd traveler. If you have a spare half‑day, the nearby Sanchi Stupa (45 km north) is worth the drive; otherwise the local market on Gandhi Chowk is a cacophony of chai, bhutta and hand‑spun cotton that feels more authentic than the polished malls of Indore. Stay in a budget guesthouse on Mukhya Bazar Road; the few rooms with ceiling fans are cheaper than the overpriced riverside resorts that promise “luxury on the Narmada”. Two days is honest: one for the river, one for the surrounding temples and the occasional boat ride to the opposite bank. Avoid the monsoon months of July–August – the Narmada swells, the roads turn to mud, and the only thing that dries out is your enthusiasm. November to February offers the clearest air and the best chance of spotting the river’s famous gharial crocs from a guided punt. If you’re after grand architecture or vibrant nightlife, keep moving north to Bhopal; Hoshangabad is a quiet, if occasionally charming, stopover for the patient.
