Orchha Falls
Drops 80m into a pool you can swim in by 11am.
Orchha Falls is the kind of roadside spectacle that promises an Instagram moment and an actual dip if you time it right, but only if you brave the early‑morning crowd. The cascade drops a clean‑cut 80 metres into a plunge pool that is surprisingly shallow on the left bank and deep enough to swim on the right; the water is at its clearest between 10 am and 12 noon, when the monsoon runoff has settled and the sun is high enough to banish the mist. Arrive by 9:30 am, park the scooter on the narrow gravel lay‑by opposite the old Raj Mahal gate, and take the steep, uneven path down the stone steps – a pair of worn‑out sandals will save your soles. The best spot to sit is the flat river rock just below the main lip; it gives an unobstructed view of the water bowing into the pool and a chance to cool off before the midday heat roars in. Skip the souvenir stall at the base; the hand‑painted postcards are overpriced and the bark‑bark noise they make does nothing for the serenity. The falls are a day‑trip add‑on from Orchha town – a two‑hour drive each way – but if you’re already exploring the Jahangir Mahal and the cenotaphs, a quick dip is a rewarding, if soggy, palate cleanser. Late summer (July–September) brings a torrent that can be dangerous, so plan for October to March for safe, swim‑able water and a crisp sky.
