Ooty Falls 3
Drops 80m into a pool you can swim in by 11am.
Ooty Falls 3 is the sort of waterfall that convinces you the Nilgiris might actually be worth the trek up the hill, but only if you time it like a seasoned photographer who knows that the sun, not the crowd, is the real attraction. Arrive at the car‑park on Upper Coonoor Road by 09:30 am, slip on a pair of old trekking shoes and head straight up the well‑marked track past the tea‑garden tea‑shack – skip the second, scenic pull‑out that sells mango‑lassi to the unsuspecting, it’s a traffic‑jam in June. By 11:00 am the cascade has built a clear, 80‑metre curtain that plunges into a turquoise plunge‑pool that is surprisingly safe for a quick dip; the water is cold enough to shock you awake but shallow enough to wade without a life‑jacket. Position yourself on the left‑hand boulder, the one with the mossy patch, for the best back‑lit shot of the spray when the sun is low. The viewpoint on the opposite bank is overrated – you’ll be elbow‑to‑elbow with school groups and the sound of chattering guides. Pack a light lunch; the nearest tea‑stall at Wellington’s is decent, but the local roadside chai you can buy at the gate will be hotter and far less tourist‑tainted. Late afternoon crowds thin out, but the light turns harsh, so if you want a swim and a decent photo, 11 am is the only window worth the effort.
