Ooty Stupa 2

Built to mark something the locals still argue about.

Curator's note

Ooty’s Stupa 2, perched on a wind‑blown knoll above Fern Hill, is the kind of off‑beat monument that locals argue was erected to commemorate an obscure hill‑tribe pact, and nobody quite knows if the stone‑capped dome actually marks a treaty, a burial ground or a forgotten tea‑plantation treaty‑stop. The road to it is a narrow, pothole‑riddled stretch of the Nilgiri Ghat that snarls after the weekend crowd on Ketti Road, so aim for a weekday early‑morning start; the mist lifts around 08:00 and the light hits the stupa’s glazed façade just right for that “I’m‑in‑the‑middle‑of‑some‑mystery‑tour” Instagram shot, without the tourist swarm you see at Ooty’s botanical garden. Park the car at the modest tea‑shop on Doddabetta Road, grab a hot cup of Nilgiri chai and a banana fritter, then trek the 15‑minute slope—avoid the steep section near the old tea‑factory, which is slick after rain. The view northwards over the valley of tea estates is decent, but the real payoff is the quiet: a lone bench under a lone eucalyptus lets you watch the clouds drift past the stupa’s dome while the only soundtrack is a distant hawker’s call. Skip the “guided” tours that charge Rs 500 for a half‑hour spiel; the site is self‑explanatory and the locals you’ll meet at the tea‑shop will happily fill in the folklore for free. Two hours is generous; an hour, if you’re only after the photo‑op, will do.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
