Curator's note

The Nandi Temple at Khajuraho is the one‑minute, absurdly photographed stop that sits opposite the Vishvanatha Temple on the western edge of the western group, and it’s both the most convenient and the most forgettable of the complex. A massive stone bull, carved in a pose that screams “I’m waiting for my master,” dominates the modest platform; the surrounding walls are stripped of the sensuous reliefs that make the main temples famous, so the only draw is the sheer size of the animal and the view of the sunrise when the light hits its glossy surface at 5 a.m. The best way to slot it in is after you’ve spent the morning at the Kandariya Mahadeva and the Lakshmana, then cross the small paved path to the western terrace for a quick coffee at the tea stall beside the orchid‑filled garden. Stay the night in a heritage guesthouse on the main road—Madhav Palace or a homely Airbnb in the town centre will get you within a five‑minute rickshaw ride of both the temple‑cluster and the market. Skip the late‑afternoon heat by arriving before 11 am; the Nandi itself offers no shade, and the surrounding stone can become an oven. If you only have a day, the Nandi can be ignored in favour of the more elaborate sculptures at the eastern group; otherwise, a brief stop here gives you a decent photo of the iconic bull without the tourist‑crowd hype.
