Curator's note

Nameri, tucked 35 km east of Tezpur in Assam’s foothills, is less a park and more a relentless jungle‑hike that tests whether you prefer beige khaki to Wi‑Fi; the nearest civilisation is Chariduar, a hamlet so small you’ll need to flag a jeep from the tea‑estate lodges on the BRPL (Brahmaputra–Hills Road) before sunrise. The park’s 200 sq km core, sandwiched between the Jia‑Bharali river to the south and the tributary Bor‑Dikorai to the east, adjoins Arunachal’s Pakhui sanctuary, creating a 1 000 sq km wildlife corridor that justifies its tiger‑reserve status, though spotting a tiger is a luxury you’ll pay for in patience, not money. The only realistic itinerary is two days of river‑rafting on the Jia‑Bharali (best in October‑April, when the water is swift but not murderous) and a single guided elephant‑back trek to the Sonai‑Rupai grasslands for a glimpse of bunched barasingha; bird‑watchers will thank you for an early‑morning jaunt to the Sessa wetlands for kingfishers and hornbills. Stay in a Chariduar homestay or the modest tea‑estate guesthouse at Moran; both provide basic beds, hot tea and a chance to hear locals complain about tourists trampling the rhododendron. Skip the night‑safari unless you relish mosquito‑laden, sleepless stints in a tin‑shed; the park’s nocturnal fauna is better heard than seen. The monsoon (June‑August) turns the trails into quagmires, so book between November and March and bring a rain‑coat for the occasional thunderstorm, not a downfall.
