Curator's note

Namdapha National Park is the wild‑card of Arunachal, a sprawling 1,985 km² of rain‑swept jungle that feels almost deliberately out of reach, and that is precisely its appeal. Reach it via the rickety National Highway 13 to Naharlagun, then a grumbling 4‑hour drive to Miao, where the only decent lodgings are the government guesthouse and a few tented homestays; expect mosquito‑scented nights and tea that tastes like boiled leaves. The park’s real draw is the northernmost low‑land evergreen forest at 27°N – dipterocarp giants tower above a chorus of over 1,400 animal species, including the elusive clouded leopard and the garrulous hornbill; a dawn trek to the Namdapha River’s floodplain, starting at 04:30, offers a chance to spot sun‑bathing mahseer and the occasional red‑shanked douc. Skip the over‑publicised “big cat safari” in the summer monsoon – leeches and swollen rivers make it miserable – and aim for the shoulder months of October to early December when the canopy dries enough for trails yet the sky is still clear. The only real compromise is the lack of Wi‑Fi and the inevitable sense that you are an intruder in a place that still belongs, for the most part, to the Chakma and Miju Mishmi tribes; respect their customs, hire a local guide from Miao, and you’ll leave with a story that feels more survival than souvenir.
