Nainital Falls
Drops 80m into a pool you can swim in by 11am.
Nainital Falls, perched just off the Mall Road on a narrow slip‑road that snakes past the St. John’s Church and the Shiva Temple, is a quick‑hit that most travellers cheat themselves by skipping in favour of Boating Lake. Arrive by 10.30 am on a clear winter morning—October to February is the only time the water is still, the mist thin, and the crowds thin enough to hear the thundering plunge rather than a gaggle of selfie‑sticks. The 80‑metre cascade drops into a surprisingly clean, emerald pool; if you’re bold enough to strip down, the water is swim‑able until about 11 am, when the sun heats the basin and the crowds swell. The best spot to sit is the rust‑red stone bench directly opposite the falls, where you can watch locals in bright kurta‑pyjamas splash and the occasional tourist tumble in clumsy enthusiasm. Skip the overpriced tea stalls on the main road; instead, buy a kettle‑brew chai from the tiny stall behind the little shrine of Mahatma Gandhi—cheaper, stronger, and you’ll avoid the tourist chatter. One hour here is plenty; any longer feels like an exercise in watching your own footprints get washed away.
