Curator's note

Nagarhole National Park, tucked in the shadows of Kodagu’s coffee‑scrub hills, is a tiger reserve that rewards patience more than polish. Arrive early on a weekday and lodge at the modest but comfortable Jungle Lodges & Resorts base in Lakkidi; the night‑safari here is the only time you’ll see leopards prowling beyond the flood‑lit tea estates, but book it weeks in advance or you’ll be shuffling back to Mysore. The non‑negotiables are a sunrise Jeep trek through the thick moist deciduous forest to the Kabini River bend – keep your camera ready for gaur herds arcing across mist – and a late‑afternoon drive to the teak‑framed watchtower at Thudi, where tiger sightings are rare but a chital stampede is guaranteed. Skip the “elephant‑back safari” on the river; the boats are overcrowded, the guides push cheap souvenirs, and the water is choked with silt. October to March is the window; the monsoon turns tracks into mud‑slides and the summer heat drives wildlife deeper into the canopy. Two days is honest for a glimpse; a three‑day stretch lets you linger over the lesser‑known waterfalls at Uppinagalu and maybe, with luck, catch a tiger on the main road at dusk.
