Munnar Beach 3

A 3km arc of pale sand and palm-and-tin shacks.

Curator's note

Munnar Beach 3 is the sort of “hidden” coastal strip that tourists never quite hear of because the nearest railhead is a three‑hour drive from Cochin, yet it sits on the same rubber‑y‑gum map that sells tea estates as a brand. The 3 km arc of pallid sand – more ivory than gold – is punctuated by ramshackle palm‑and‑tin shacks that sell steaming puttu and a surprisingly decent cup of cardamom‑spiced chai at 07:30, when the tide is low enough to see the coral remnants glinting beneath the water. Arrive by bicycle from the nearby tea gate at 06:45, park the bike under the lone mango tree, and claim a wooden bench before the early‑morning crowd of local fishermen thins out – they will otherwise shove you into the shallow surf for a free lesson in crab‑pot fishing. Skip the afternoon “sun‑set packages” sold by the shacks; the view is blocked by a permanent construction crane that has been there since 2018, and the promised “golden hour” is a dull orange washed over by industrial haze. The only time worth staying past noon is the 14:30 tea‑time ferry that departs for the back‑water village of Kuttikkulam, where you can actually taste the sea – not just the salt on the wind. Visit in January or February when the monsoon‑season mist is gone, and you’ll finally notice that the sand isn’t just pale, it’s genuinely clean – a rarity in Kerala’s over‑touristed shoreline.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
