Curator's note

Menjor Multipurpose Research Centre and Unity Park in Khangabok, Thoubal, is the kind of contrived “unity garden” that trips the hand‑crafters of Indian tourism. The 10‑acre enclave is a manicured lawn dotted with a Sanamahist Pakhangba shrine, a modest Hindu mandir, a Buddha‑style stupa, a white‑washed church and a tin‑roofed mosque, each a tokenised slice of Manipur’s mosaic. The museum wing, though cramped, strings together Meitei textiles, tribal artefacts and a few colonial‑era photographs; it is tolerable for a quick glance but not worth a dedicated hour. The real draw is the park’s lazy river‑walk and the occasional cultural workshop—often run by local NGOs that truly care about preserving the crafts you see on the nearby market stalls of Khangabok Bazaar. Stay in Imphal’s Hotel Classic for a reliable base; the two‑hour drive is tolerable if you’ve already booked the Spectacular Loktak Lake in the same itinerary. Visit in November–February when the hill‑climate is crisp; the monsoon turns the garden into a soggy brown carpet, and the “harmony” narrative feels forced under the drumming of the rainy season. Skip the guided “unity” tours—most are glossy, scripted, and end in a souvenir shop selling mass‑produced prayer beads.
