Curator's note

Matheran Railway Station, perched at 800 metres on the terminus of the 21 km Matheran Hill Railway, is less a grand terminal and more a nostalgic boxcar cobbled together from colonial brass and weathered timber; a whistle‑blown invitation to the car‑free hill that bans motorised traffic, so the only way to feel the altitude is on foot or a horse‑drawn rickshaw. Arrive early – the 6.5 am local from Neral is a cramped, rattling affair that tumbles down the gorge just as the mist lifts, offering a fleeting glimpse of the dense teak forest that will dominate your stay. The platform is a single, uneven slab flanked by a modest ticket office, a dilapidated waiting room with a dusty fan, and a few stalls hawking steaming vada pav and hot masala chai in tin cups – the best fuel for the uphill climb. Skip the “heritage train” marketed to tourists; the real experience is the slow crawl through 12 tunnels and over 5 bridges, each a postcard in itself. Stay in one of the colonial bungalows on Main Road or the budget guesthouse at the foot of the hill; both give easy access to the sedan chair‑free promenade that snakes through the pine‑laden roads. The best months are October to February when the monsoon has drained the tracks and the air is crisp; avoid July–September when landslides can close the line without warning. If you’re craving a view, hop off at Charlotte Lake station for a short trek to the lake’s turquoise water before the train shunts back to the terminus for the final, lingering descent.
