Curator's note

Marble Rocks, the gleaming gorge that the Narmada slices through at Bhedaghat, is the kind of roadside marvel you’ll only appreciate if you tolerate early‑morning crowds and a thin veil of tourist‑baked haze. Arrive by 07:30 am for the best light — the river’s turquoise surface reflects the milky white cliffs while the heat of the day hasn’t yet turned the water into a steaming ribbon, and the throng of school groups and Delhi‑based tour buses is still thin enough to let you hear the water’s rush. The main draw is the 3‑km boat ride from the marble‑faced jetty near Doodh Ganga to the opposite bank; the crews shout their price in Hindi, so haggle if you’re feeling cheeky, and remember the boat is cramped, not a “luxury” experience. On the far side, descend the well‑marked steps to the “Balancing Rock” and the small temple of Lord Narmada, then swing by the local marble workshops where artisans labour on intricate chela‑type sculptures — it’s a useful reminder that the surrounding town survives on the same stone. Skip the souvenir stalls that hawk cheap marble jewellery at inflated prices; instead, buy a single hand‑carved piece directly from the workshop, where you can watch the dust settle. The site is pleasant year‑round, but the monsoon (July–September) can make the gorge treacherously slick, and the scorching summer (May–June) renders the river scalding and the marble unbearably hot for a stroll. Stay overnight in a modest guesthouse on the Bhedaghat–Jabalpur road, preferably one with a roof‑top terrace, so you can watch the sunset wash the gorge in a soft pink, an image that will survive the inevitable Instagram overload. Two hours is enough for the boat, a brief walk, and a coffee at the adjoining café; any longer and you’ll merely be watching traffic crawl past the same limestone cliffs.
