Curator's note

Mananchira, a rectangular spring‑fed pond tucked into the exact centre of Kozhikode, is the city’s oddly soothing excuse for a brief pause between traffic‑jammed MG Road and the ever‑crowded Thali market. The 3½‑acre water body is flanked by the old British‑era Town Hall, the ornate Kappad Beach souvenir shop turned tea stall, and the deceptively elegant Sarovaram Bio‑Park, whose swans are more for Instagram than ecology. The real draw is the early‑morning ritual: sit on the stone balustrade at 06:30, watch locals in dhotis file past with a steaming cup of toddy‑spiced chai, and let the pond’s cool mist temper the humid coastal air. For lunch, slip into nearby Sree Krishna Sweet Meat for a meaty fish moilee – the kind you can’t find in the chain restaurants of nearby Calicut. Evening is the only time the surrounding street‑vendors turn the area into a noisy market; if you crave solitude, book a room at the mid‑range Heritage Inn on Kottoor Road and retreat before dusk. Two days in Kozhikode lets you absorb Mananchira without feeling rushed; three lets you slip into the nearby Kappad beach sunrise, which, unlike the over‑photographed Varkala cliffs, still feels unmanufactured. Visit between November and February to dodge the monsoon deluge; the July heat makes the pond’s stagnant surface unappealing, and the mosquito‑laden evenings are best avoided. Skip the late‑night “light‑show” that some hotels tout – the pond is best experienced in natural daylight, not under garish LED strips.
