Curator's note

Man Sagar is the only stretch of water that Jaipur condescends to call a lake, and it only works if you treat it as a stop‑over rather than a destination. Built by Raja Man Singh in 1610 by damming the Dravyavati, its greatest claim to fame is the marble‑crowned Jal Mahal perched on a tiny island; you’ll see it best at sunrise from the road on the south‑west rim, when the light catches the dome and the wind is still. The lake itself is a concrete‑lined reservoir, so the surrounding promenade is a gaunt, pebbled strip dotted with vendors selling lassi and fried bajjis – good for a quick snack, terrible for a stroll. The most honest itinerary is a half‑day after you’ve explored the Amber Fort: park at the gate, walk the 2 km path past the Jaipur Zoo, pause at the old British‑era Pump House for a photo, then cross the rickety bridge to the perimeter of Jal Mahal and watch the sun rise over the Aravalli foothills. Skip the boat rides; the motor‑powered shuttles are noisy, overpriced, and do little more than bob you past the palace. Stay in the Old City (e.g. near Chokhi Dhani or Laxmi Mandal) for cheap guesthouses, and visit in November‑February; the monsoon turns the dam into a silt‑filled gulley and the summer heat makes the concrete banks unbearable. If you need a break from the crowds, head west to the smaller Nahar Singh Bagh garden – it’s quieter and offers a better view of the lake’s reflection without the tourist throng.
