Lucknow National Park 2
National park; tigers if you are very, very lucky.
Lucknow’s National Park 2 is a peculiar after‑thought for travellers who think the city is only about biryani and colonial boulevards, and for the right reason: it is the only slice of raw, semi‑arid scrub you’ll find a half‑hour’s drive from Hazratganj, and it actually works as a wildlife escape if you can stomach the lack of visitor infrastructure. The park’s main gate on Aliganj‑Bukuwa Road opens at sunrise, and the only realistic chance of spotting a tiger is a pre‑dawn safari on a private 4×4 – you’ll need to book through the state forest department, not the hotel concierge, and be prepared to sit in a rattling Jeep for hours while a guide recites statistics that never materialise. For most people the real reward is the early‑morning bird‑call chorus at the grass‑land waterhole near the old Baori, where you can actually see a flock of Sarus cranes if you stay still. Skip the overpriced “tiger‑track” tours that start after 10 am – the park closes to tourists at 4 pm and the heat makes the animals retreat. The best months are October to February; monsoon turns the scrub into a mud‑sodden mess, and May‑June is sweltering. Stay in the central Lucknow hotels on Ashok Marg for easy access, and bring a refillable water bottle – there are no kiosks inside the park and the nearest tea stall is a 30‑minute walk from the gate.
