Curator's note

Lothian is the most underrated shout‑out to the Indus civilization, perched on the edge of the modern town of Saragpur in Gujarat’s arid Bhal region, and it deserves a half‑day if you can stomach the heat of March–May. Skip the five‑hour bus from Ahmedabad and hire a private driver to the unmarked turnoff on SH 25; the nearest decent stay is the modest Heritage Guesthouse in nearby Dholka, where sunrise floods the simple courtyard. The site itself is a compact rectangle of baked‑brick platforms, but the dock, the only confirmed riverine port of the Harappan world, is the real draw – walk the sloping ramp at low tide and imagine a 4,000‑year‑old cargo of bead‑laden jars bobbing on the now‑silted Khari‑Rav River. The on‑site museum, cramped but well‑curated, houses the iconic bronze “dancing girl” replica and a cache of perforated shells that hint at far‑flung trade with Mesopotamia; skip the glossy audio guide and linger over the seal‑stele displaying a stylised antelope, which is far more evocative than any glossy brochure. Don’t expect lush scenery; the surrounding scrubland is stark, the sand‑blasted limestone walls cracked, and the occasional vendor peddling “hand‑made” souvenirs will test your patience. A single morning here pairs nicely with a late‑afternoon visit to the nearby Rojdi settlement for contrast, and if you’re pressed for time, the dock and the Great Bath are the only non‑negotiables.
