Leh / Ladakh Beach 2

A 3km arc of pale sand and palm-and-tin shacks.

Curator's note

Leh’s so‑called “Beach 2” is a 3 km arc of bleached sand that mysteriously sits on the edge of the high‑altitude lake near the Chilling camp, the only place in Ladakh where you’ll ever hear a palm‑and‑tin shanty claim to be a beach. The reality is a wind‑scrubbed strip where the sun beats down at 3,500 m and the only “surf” is a thin layer of algae‑slick on the water’s edge at high noon. Go in late September or early October: the monsoon never reaches Ladakh, the crowds are gone, and the temperature dip makes the sand tolerable for the few hours you’ll actually want to sit. Arrive before sunrise and claim a spot near the rusted caravanserai ruins; the early light throws dramatic shadows on the distant snow‑capped Zanskar peaks and the lake glistens like molten glass. Pack a high‑altitude sunscreen, a thick fleece and a thermos of butter tea – the wind on the lake is deceptively cold. Skip the push‑cart vendors selling “Ladakhi lassi” in plastic cups; the thing freezes within minutes and turns into a sour ice‑slush. The only worthwhile indulgence is a single plate of thukpa from the tiny stall opposite the water‑pump, eaten on a reclaimed wooden bench while watching the pink‑hued sunset melt into the horizon. Two hours is all you need; anything longer feels like an endurance test in a desert that pretends to be a beach.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
