Curator's note

Lakshmana Temple is the stubborn middle child of the Khajuraho ensemble – glorious enough to make the UNESCO list, yet constantly eclipsed by the more flamboyant Kandariya Mahadeva. Built in 950 CE by Yashovarman, the temple is devoted to Vaikuntha Vishnu, so expect a modest shrine rather than the erotic plasterwork that defines its neighbours; the modesty is intentional, the carvings focusing on mythic battles and serene deities rather than the usual erotic parade. Schedule a sunrise visit when the east‑facing sanctum catches the first light; the silhouette against the pink horizon is the only moment the stone seems to breathe. The narrow western stairway leading from the temple complex through an old market lane—now peppered with souvenir stalls selling cheap brass figurines—can get congested, so slip in from the less‑trodden south gate near the museum entrance. Skip the audio guide in the ticket office; it rattles on a loop of generic Hindi and English that tells you nothing you can’t read on the stone. Instead, bring a pocket guide or a decent app that explains the Vishnu iconography, otherwise you’ll mistake the four‑armed figure for a generic king. Stay the night in the heritage hotel at Panna Mehal, a short rickety walk from the site; the rooms are tiny but the courtyard offers a quiet view of the temple’s paling towers after the tourist rush has thinned. Late November to early March is the only sensible window—monsoon mud will turn the pathways into slushy traps and the summer heat makes the stone unbearably hot for any prolonged look. Two hours is honest for a quick photograph; three to linger and read the epigraphic panels is the only way to appreciate why this understated Vishnu shrine still matters amidst Khajuraho’s more licentious neighbours.
