Curator's note

Lake Tsomgo, perched at 3 753 m on the winding 40‑km road from Gangtok, is a cliché that works only if you accept the crowds and the weather‑dependent drama. The drive itself is the first test of stamina: steep hairpins, sudden fog and a relentless army of jeeps queuing at the checkpoint near the Indian Army cantonment. Arrive early – before 08:00 – to beat the tourist bus swarm that turns the lakeside into a pedestrian traffic jam and to catch the sunrise when the water flashes turquoise before the clouds steal the colour. The lake’s famed polychrome sheen is a myth; most days it is a muted grey‑blue, only turning pink in early spring and vivid green after the monsoon, and even then the effect is fleeting. A short trek to the nearby Baba Mandir adds a quiet counter‑point, but the longer hike to the 10,000‑foot Lnakhang (the Sikkimese “gateway”) is overrated for a day‑trip – the path is uneven and the view is blocked by cloud unless you time it for a clear October morning. Stay the night in a simple guesthouse at Yuksom or in Gangtok’s Ghoom area; the latter lets you retreat before the road closes for snow in December. Skip the “motor‑bike ride around the lake” offered by every tour desk – the roads are a hazard and you’ll see the same vista twice. Late‑summer (July–September) is the only window when the lake is liquid; otherwise it’s a frozen mirage that looks better in photographs than in person.
