Curator's note

Ladnu’s Jain temple complex, tucked into the desert town of Ladnu in Rajasthan’s Nagaur district, is the kind of pilgrimage spot that rewards patience more than Instagram. The main shrine – the Shri Neminath Digambar Jain Temple – is a white‑marble marvel erected in the early 20th century, its towering shikhar piercing the dusty horizon and its interior cloaked in intricate gilt reliefs of the 24 tirthankaras. Arrive just before sunrise to catch the soft light glint off the carved columns; the morning aarti at 6.30 am is surprisingly tranquil, the chanting barely audible over the distant baaing of goats. The adjoining Bhattaraka’s residence and the modest eight‑storey “Bada Bada” tower are worth a quick glance, but the real draw is the labyrinth of smaller shrines along the narrow lane behind the main hall – each housing a half‑finished marble idol that hints at the community’s perpetual state of “work‑in‑progress”. Stay in a clean, budget guesthouse on Station Road; the only decent food is the simple thali at Jaisal Gambhir’s dhaba, where the dal‑bajra combo is surprisingly decent for a town that mostly serves chapatis. Skip the souvenir stalls on Main Bazaar – they peddle cheap trinkets that tarnish quickly – and instead wander to the nearby Rani Sati shrine early in the afternoon for a quieter perspective. The best months are November through February; the heat of May–June will melt any reverence you might have felt. Two half‑days is honest; a full day lets you sit in the courtyard, watch the sun set behind the sandstone cliffs, and maybe understand why this place remains off the typical tourist radar.
