Curator's note

Kuttalam Palace sits on a bewildering 56.6‑acre plot in the middle of Courtallam, a festival‑town that exists mainly to sell you waterfall selfies, and it is the only Travancore edifice that still answers to a Kerala Archaeological Department rather than Tamil Nadu’s tourism board, which explains the perpetual queue at the gate and the occasional bruised ego of the guard who insists on checking your ID even if you’re just there for a tea break. Built in 1882 by Vishakam Thirunal, the red‑brick complex is more impressive for its sheer size and the way it gazes over the Western Ghats than for any lavish interiors – the rooms are locked, the furniture is gone, and the only things you can actually see are the overgrown teak garden, a crumbling guesthouse roof and a view of Courtallam Falls that is spectacular only in the misty post‑monsoon months of October to February. Stay in a modest guesthouse on the Tenkasi‑Courtallam road rather than the overpriced boutique hotels that line the falls; they give you a short walk to the palace gate and a chance to hear the river’s roar without the din of souvenir hawkers. Two hours is enough to photograph the façade, stroll the neglected lawns and perhaps spot a peacock, but allocate an extra half‑day if you want to combine the palace with the morning “thooral” (waterfall) at Main Falls and the evening “Sethumadi” plunge at the nearby Papanasam. Skip the guided “royal‑heritage” tour that promises “palace secrets” – it’s a thinly veiled souvenir shop – and instead bring a notebook; the real secret here is patience, and the fact that the palace is a quiet reminder that this corner of Tamil Nadu still wears its Kerala skin.
