Kowdiar Palace

Kowdiar Palace, perched on an overgrown boulevard in the affluent Kowdiar‑South zone of Thiruvananthapuram, is the private residence of the Travancore royal family and, unless you have an invitation from a descendant, it remains a ‘look‑but‑don’t‑enter’ attraction; the high walls and occasional royal carriages are the only spectacles. Built in 1934 by Maharaja Sri Chithira Thirunal to mark his sister Karthika Thirunal Lakshmi Bayi’s marriage, the red‑brick façade and subtle Art‑Deco touches are best appreciated at dusk when the façade catches the waning sun and the streetlights flick on. For a worthwhile outing, park on the nearby Rajeev Road and stroll past the modest Government College of Fine Arts before stopping at the iconic Kowdiar Gate; the view is a quiet counterpoint to the throngs at Padmanabhaswamy Temple a kilometre away.
