Curator's note

Kotumsar Cave, tucked in the Kanger limestone belt about ten kilometres north of Jagdalpur, is the only limestone system in central India that lets you actually feel the earth breathing; the main tunnel stretches roughly 200 metres, with dripping galleries, stalactite curtains and a few tight side‑passes that feel more like a spelunking rehearsal than a tourist‑friendly stroll. The best time to visit is the dry season, November to March, when the interior is cool (around 18 °C) rather than the monsoon‑sodden mess that turns the entrance slick and the downstream lake a murky swamp. Arrive early – the park opens at 0800 hrs – and hire a local guide from the Kanger Valley National Park office; the fee covers the mandatory headlamp and rope, which are otherwise overpriced from the roadside stalls. Dress in quick‑dry clothes, sturdy boots and bring a spare pair of socks; the cave floor is a mixture of slick stone and shallow water that will soak any cotton socks instantly. Inside, don’t be fooled by the popular “photo‑stop” at the massive drip hall – the light is dim and flash will ruin the delicate formations, so use your phone’s ambient mode. Skip the souvenir stall at the gate if you’re not keen on plastic bat‑shaped trinkets; instead, sample the simple thali at the small dhaba on the Jagdalpur‑Bhilai road before you head back, where the rasgulla‑like jeera rice will feel like a reward after a half‑hour of crawling. Two half‑days is honest: one for the cave, one for a quick trek to the nearby Kanger River Picnic Spot, where you can watch the water carve new stalactites in real time.
