Curator's note

Kotka Sea Beach, tucked on the edge of the Sundarbans in Khulna, is the kind of liminal spot that trips up anyone expecting the polished decks of Cox’s Bazar; here the sand is brackish, the tide rolls in with a sigh and mangrove silhouettes stare back from the waterline. The only way to reach it is a half‑hour rickety drive off the Dhaka‑Khulna highway, then a bumpy unpaved lane that ends at a forlorn, half‑concealed signpost – a good indicator that you’re not in a tourist bubble. Arrive at low tide around 04:30 for the rare chance to wade far enough to see the mud‑flat crabs scuttle and the sunrise bleed gold over the mangrove canopy; the light fades fast, and by 09:00 the beach is a quiet, salty mud‑pie that locals use for drying fish. There are no cafés, no lifeguards, and the nearest food stall sells only boiled shrimp with a side of chilies – bring cash and your own water. Stay in a modest guesthouse in the nearby Batiaghata town; the rooms are basic but the owners will arrange a boat to the Sundarbans for a day‑trip, which is far more rewarding than the beach itself. Skip the “sunbathe until sunset” plan – the monsoon season (June to September) brings mosquito swarms and river swelling that can make the path impassable. November to February is the window when the air is crisp, the tide is predictable, and you can actually enjoy the eerie beauty of Kotka without the heat beating you into a daze. Two days is honest: one for the shoreline at dawn, another for a quick Sundarbans excursion; anything longer feels like lingering on a forgotten postcard.
