Curator's note

Konark is best tackled as a day‑trip from Puri, but don’t treat it as a photo‑stop: the Sun Temple’s marble‑white chariot‑walls deserve half a day of unhurried inspection, especially the intricately carved Wheel of Time (the massive stone wheel at the western façade) and the erotic mithuna panels that line the inner mandapa; the towering shikhara that once pierced the sky is long gone, so set expectations accordingly. Arrive early—gate opens at 6 am and the soft sunrise washes the stone in a colour that no flash can replicate—then wander south along the beach road to Chandrabhaga, where a quiet stretch of sand offers a breather before you re‑enter the complex. The nearby Sun Temple Museum (right next to the gate) houses the scattered sculptures that were rescued from the ruins, worth a quick look if you have spare time. Skip the overly‑commercial souvenir stalls on the main road; instead, snack on a steaming plate of rasgulla from the stall opposite the main gate or a spicy boiled egg from the roadside tea‑seller. November to February is the only viable window; the monsoon months turn the approach road slick and the summer heat turns the stone into an oven. Stay the night in Puri’s Old Town—budget guesthouses on Rue Madhusudan Road give easy access to both the beach and the 35‑km drive back after sunset. If you have only a few hours, skip the beach and head straight to the temple; otherwise, a sunset at Chandrabhaga after the temple visit adds a memorable coastal counterpoint.
