Curator's note

Kodaikanal Falls, perched on the steep slope above the town’s main promenade, is the sort of Instagram‑friendly punch‑line that hides a punctuality problem: the cascade plunges 80 metres into a chilly plunge pool that is only safe to bathe before the mid‑morning crowd swells, so aim for a 9:30 am arrival and you’ll still have a half‑hour to wade in before the local school trips flood the railings. The best spot to sit is the weather‑worn stone bench under the old British tea‑house, where you can watch the water thunder into the basin while sipping a strong filter‑coffee from Café Raintree on College Road – the coffee is the only thing that doesn’t taste like tourist‑trap masala. Skip the souvenir stalls on the lower path; they hawk plastic key‑chains that will melt in the monsoon and add no cultural value. The walk from Coaker’s Walk to the falls is a brisk 15‑minute climb up pine‑scented timber, but be aware the steps are slippery after a drizzle, so sturdy boots are non‑negotiable. Visit in late October or early November when the mist is thin and the air is crisp; the monsoon will turn the trail into a mud‑slide and the winter chill can freeze the pool solid. Two hours is all you need, but if you’re staying at the modest Heritage Kodaikanal on Brookside Road, book a room with a balcony – the sunrise over the falls is worth the early alarm.
