Curator's note

The Khas Mahal, tucked behind the Diwan-i‑Khas in the Red Fort, is the private heart of Shah Jahan’s empire and the only place where the emperor could escape the pomp of public audiences. Inside, three modestly‑spaced rooms—Viz‑tasbih‑khana, the khwabgah sleeping chamber, and the tosha‑khana wardrobe‑turned‑baithak—are cloaked in white marble veined with pink, their surfaces dotted with pastel floral motifs and a ceiling half‑gilded in a tired attempt at opulence. The real marvel is the intricately carved screen bearing the Mizan‑i‑Adal, the scale of justice, which still swings lazily above a faded fresco of a courtly scene. Visit at sunrise when the east‑facing windows catch a soft glow; later the crowds from the main courtyard will flood the passage and the subtle elegance disappears under tourist chatter. Skip the audio guide in favour of a quick glance and a mental note of the marble’s coolness—there’s no point lingering for hours. A half‑day permit on the Red Fort ticket is honest; any longer feels like a forced reverence for a space that was meant to be private.
