Curator's note

Khajuraho rewards patience more than polish. The western cluster – Kandariya Mahadeva, Lakshmana and Devi Jagat—arrives at sunrise when the sandstone glows and the erotic panels are barely visible, which is the only time they don’t look like a gaudy postcard. Skip the Eastern Group unless you have a full afternoon; the Jain temples there are quieter but the architecture is repetitive. Base yourself in the modest guesthouse on Badi Road, where you can grab a steaming plate of kachri ki sabzi and a chai before the bus from Chhatarpur (the 40‑minute ride that runs every two hours). The site’s layout is best tackled on foot: start at the main entrance, loop clockwise, and linger at the intricate toranas of the Lakshmana before moving on to the celestial dance of the Devi Jagat’s ceiling. Late afternoon heat makes the stone surfaces scorching, so retreat to the museum café for a mango lassi and sketch the silhouette of the main spire against the dimming sky. November to February is the only window when the crowds thin and the weather is tolerable; avoid the monsoon, when the carvings turn slick and the pathways become treacherous.
