Curator's note

Keelnamandi, a low‑key archaeological scatter tucked in the Keelnamandi Panchayat of the Vandavasi Union in Tiruvannamalui, is not on any glossy itinerary but rewards the patient wanderer with faintly carved Tamil-Brahmi shards, a crumbling Satavahana brick platform and the occasional stray sculpture that hints at a forgotten trade outpost. The site sits half an hour’s rickety bus ride from Vandavasi railway station and a further 15 minutes on an unpaved road that swallows GPS signals, so hire a local driver from the modest Kallakudi guesthouse (the only decent place to sleep within 20 km) and brace for dust. Arrive at sunrise; the low light accentuates the weathered stonework and the morning heat is still bearable. A local guide from the Tiruvannamalai Museum can point out the rare copper alloy coins and the faint outline of a proto‑Buddhist stupa—both easy to miss without a trained eye. Skip the evening because the site is unlit and the night insects are relentless. The nearest café is in the tiny K. M. Bazaar, where you can nurse a strong filter‑coffee and a vada‑pav before the journey back to Tiruvannamalai. Two days is honest if you also want to explore the nearby Hindupur temple ruins; otherwise a half‑day suffice, provided you tolerate the lack of facilities and the occasional trek through cow‑stained paddy fields.
