Kanyakumari Beach 2

A 3km arc of pale sand and palm-and-tin shacks.

Curator's note

Kanyakumari Beach 2 is the unsavoury 3 km arc of pale sand flanked by a chaotic line of palm‑and‑tin shacks that stretches from the Vivekananda Rock Memorial down to the small fishing‑village of Thiruvattaru; it is the only place where you can watch a sunset over the Indian Ocean while the distant silhouette of the Trivandrum‑bound railway line sputters on the horizon. Arrive no later than 17:30 to claim a spot on the concrete bench of the Government Beach pavilion – the only place with a shade‑less view of the confluence of three seas – and bring a bottle of chilled lime soda, because the stalls selling fried banana chips and sweet coconut water are over‑priced and invariably serve water that tasted of sea‑salt. Skip the “photo‑stop” at the nearby Shiva‑Shakti statue; it is a gaudy metal contraption that blocks the real vista and attracts gulls that will steal your chips. The best time to visit is early December to late February; the winter haze clears the air and the tidal swing is high enough to expose the rock‑platform where locals gather for evening prayer. Stay the night at the modest guesthouse on Kottaram Street, a few blocks from the beach, where the staff will recommend a midnight stroll to the lighthouse – the only place you’ll hear the waves without the constant chatter of tourists.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
