Curator's note

Kannada University, perched on the low granite rise just east of the Virupaksha temple complex, feels less a must‑see than a useful pit stop if you’re already hacking the Hampi ruin‑scape. Founded in 1991 to safeguard and showcase Karnataka’s language, folklore and literary heft, the campus is a spread of beige blocks, a modest amphitheatre and a surprisingly atmospheric library that occasionally hosts classical dance recitals – worth a quick peek if you land at 10 am on a weekday when the hall is still empty of school groups. The real draw is the adjoining “Kannada Script Garden”, a landscaped plot where the alphabet is carved into stone; it offers decent light for a lunch‑time photo, but the surrounding roads are a muddle of monsoon‑slick steps and stray goats, so wear sturdy shoes and keep your camera on a strap. Skip the guided tours that charge Rs 500 for a ten‑minute walk; they’re a waste of time and money when the campus signage is already in English and Kannada. Pair the visit with a vapour‑sweet cup of filter coffee at the nearby Jaggayyapeta café, then cross the river for the more iconic Vittala Temple – the university won’t replace that, but it smooths the gap between the temple’s crowds and Hampi’s quieter northern hills. Early November to late February is the only window when the heat won’t melt the mortar, and a single night in a guesthouse at Hampi Bazaar is enough to slot the university in between sunrise at the Hampi Bazaar market and sunset on the Hemakuta hills.
