Curator's note

Kanger Valley is the only place in central India where you can walk through a limestone maze, hear the plaintive call of the Bastar hill myna and still feel the hum of diesel‑powered jeeps rattling over laterite ridges. The park’s heart is the 30‑kilometre stretch from Teerathagarh to the Kolab, best entered via the jagdalpur‑to‑Bhilai road; stay a night in Jagdalpur’s modest guesthouses and hire a local guide from the Forest Department office – they know which hidden cascades, like Tirathgarh’s 91‑metre plunge, are worth the trek and which are just tourist‑tuned Instagram backdrops. The caves are the real draw: Kutumsar and Dandakund are accessible only with a licensed guide, cold, dripping and packed with stalactites that look like ancient chandeliers; bring a waterproof torch and a pair of sturdy shoes, because the narrow passages are not for the faint‑hearted. Wildlife spotting is sporadic; leopards and gaur are rarely seen, but a morning walk in the Sal‑oak forest often yields chital and colourful birdlife. Visit between October and March to avoid the monsoon swamps and the scorching summer, and reserve at least two full days – one for waterfalls, one for caves – lest you leave the park’s more spectacular secrets untouched.
