Curator's note

Kalka railway station is the unglamorous launching pad for the Shimla‑to‑the‑Himalayas train, and if you’re hunting for a postcard, you’ll be disappointed; the brick‑and‑concrete terminus on NH 5 is a functional mess of ticket windows, a crumbling footbridge and a food kiosk that sells only paratha and tea at highway prices. Arrive early – the 06:15 Delhi–Kalka express pulls in at 05:45, and you’ll need a minute to confirm the platform for the 08:55 departing hill‑train, which departs from Platform 1 and snakes through 103 km of UNESCO‑listed gorges, tunnels and viaducts. The real reward is the brief glimpse of colonial architecture in the adjoining Bungalow Road, where a modest guesthouse such as the Himalayan Guest House offers clean rooms and a rooftop view of the station’s ever‑moving locomotive carousel. Skip the overpriced souvenir stall on the west side; instead walk south to the neighbouring Kalka market for a quick lassi and the occasional paneer tikka. The best time to visit is October to March, when the fog lifts and the Himalayas are visible on the distant ridge; monsoon drifts make the line treacherous and the station’s old drainage clogs. Two hours is honest for the station and a sip of history, four lets you catch the 11:30 Shimla departure and still make a decent lunch in Kalka before the train disappears into the mountains.
