Jummapatti railway station
Jummapatti railway station is a railway station on the Neral–Matheran railway line of the Matheran Hill Railway. The station is about 4.8 km from Neral railway station.
Jummapatti railway station is the unremarkable midway point on the Neral‑Matheran line, a narrow‑gauge curiosity that clings to the Western Ghats forty‑odd kilometres south of Mumbai. The halt sits a tidy 4.8 km from Neral, nestled in a tea‑stained valley where the train rattles past banana groves, water‑spouting paddy fields and the occasional rust‑red farmhouse. There is no ticket office, no waiting room beyond a cracked wooden bench, and the platform is just long enough for a single carriage – so bring a stiff tea bag and a sense of humour. Arrive at dawn for the most photogenic steam puff, when the mist curls over the track and the distant peaks blush pink; the view of the Bhimashankar‑type hills from the eastbound platform is worth the hour’s wait. Trains run sparingly, usually one every two hours, so plan around the timetable posted at Neral – missing it means a long trek back down the steep, untarred path that leads to the nearest road. Stay at an eco‑lodges in Matheran if you intend to linger; otherwise, skip Jummapatti and disembark at the more scenic Aman Lodge stop, where the tea stalls actually serve tea. The line operates best from November to February, when the monsoon has emptied the valleys and the heat is bearable; the summer months turn the track into a sweltering oven and the station a dusty mirage.
