Curator's note

Jim Corbett National Park is a mandatory stop for tiger‑spotting enthusiasts, but it is also a test of patience and logistics. Book a jungle lodge on the Dhela‑Nagzira corridor for the reliable early‑morning safari; the private bungalows at Corbett Retreat or Aahana are the only places where a 5 am jeep will actually wait for you. The core zone – Dhikala, Bijrani and Jhirna – is the only part where tigers still roam, so a two‑day, two‑safari package is the bare minimum, with a sunrise drive on the first day and a dusk drive on the second when the animals are most active. Arrive between October and March; the monsoon swells the Kosi and Ramganga, turning tracks into mud and cancelling most safaris. Skip the popular “Corbett Museum” in Kaladhungi unless you’re a die‑hard fan of the man’s hunting anecdotes – it adds little beyond a few dated photographs. Bring a stout pair of boots, a wide‑brim hat and a waterproof jacket; the forest is humid, the insects relentless, and the heat at 1,200 m can be deceptively oppressive. If your budget allows, splurge on a night in the forest‑edge resort at Jhilong, where you can hear tiger calls after dark – an experience that’s worth the extra rupees and the inevitable early wake‑up.
