Curator's note

Jethabhai ni Vav in the Isanpur fringe of Ahmedabad is a three‑storey sandstone stepwell that most guidebooks pretend doesn’t exist, and that is precisely why it survives the tourist‑mash of the city centre. The well lies a few minutes’ rickshaw ride north of the Sha‑e‑Alam mosque on the dusty Hebat Road, and the only sign you’ll see is a rusted brass plaque that reads “Stepwell – 1904”. The geometry is modest – a descending arcade of arches punctuated by stone brackets – but the water‑catchment basin still clings to monsoon rain, making the surface a mirror for the low‑sunlight at dawn. Arrive half an hour before sunrise; the light glints off the carved lintels and the occasional pigeon gives an authentic feel that the heavily lit Hathni Kund never can. There is no ticket, no guide, and certainly no coffee shop, so bring a bottle of water and a pair of sturdy shoes – the limestone steps are slick after rain. Skip the elaborate narratives offered by the nearby heritage tour operators; they’ll whisk you to the more photogenic Adalaj Vav and leave Jethabhai as a footnote. The best way to stay is a modest guesthouse in the Isanpur industrial lane, where the street food stalls serve hot dhokla and chai at 7 am. Two hours is honest for a contemplative walk; anything longer feels like a plodding heritage‑class exercise. Visit between October and February to avoid the searing June heat that turns the well into a furnace.
