Curator's note

Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary is the one‑day, barely‑noticed green lung on the edge of Arunachal’s capital, and you only bother if you’ve already exhausted the tea‑scented hills of Bomdila. The park was demarcated in 1968, its perimeters defined by the River Pam to the east, the low‑key Pachin ridge to the south, Neorochi in the north‑east and the trickle‑y Chingke stream up north, so the terrain is a predictable roll of steep, shaded ridges rather than any dramatic alpine backdrop. Arrive early on a dry October‑March morning, when the monsoon’s mud has retreated and the hill‑birds—specifically the reclusive Grey‑browed Woodpecker and the elusive White‑spotted Babbler—are actually audible; otherwise you’ll hear only distant traffic from Itanagar. Base yourself at the modest Hotel Atanui in the city centre, walk or rickshaw to the sanctuary gate on Rimsagar Road, and hire a single‑track guide from the forest department (they’re cheap, but don’t expect a charismatic naturalist). The 2 km trek to the riverine trail along Pam gives you a glimpse of the rare hickory‑leaf fern and a glimpse of a red‑backed macaque, but the promised “tribal wildlife experiences” are mostly staged for school groups and feel rehearsed. Skip the souvenir stalls on the southern edge—cheap plastic lizards and gaudy postcards—and instead linger at the small watchtower near Neorochi for a panoramic view of Itanagar’s sprawl looking back at the sanctuary you just left. Two hours is honest for the whole experience; any longer feels like an excuse to walk in circles while the city’s traffic hums on.
