Curator's note

Ita Fort sits inconspicuously on the slope above Itanagar’s bustling market lane, a crumbling brick rectangle that most visitors walk past without a second thought; yet, for the few who linger, it offers the only concrete glimpse into the Chutia kingdom that pre‑dated the British annexation of Assam. The best way to encounter it is early on a Tuesday or Thursday – the city’s weekend crowds thin out, the heat of May‑June still hangs heavy, and the fort’s battered walls are illuminated by a low sun that brings out the reddish‑brown mortar. Hire a local guide from the nearby Arunchokhra bazaar who can point out the original gate, the outer moat’s shallow depression, and the occasional stone relief that hints at the 14th‑century Gauri Narayan line of hill forts. Do not expect a museum; the site is a sparsely curated ruin with a single rusty cannon and a signboard that reads “Ita Fort – Fort of Bricks”. A quick tea at the roadside stall on Gorju Road – chai with a dash of ginger and a slice of banana fritter – rounds off the visit; the real payoff is the panoramic view over the Brahmaputra valley, visible when the surrounding trees are trimmed back for the monsoon road works. Two hours is honest, four would simply let you wander the nearby Buddhist monastery and the state museum, but beware the monsoon months (July‑September) when the paths turn to slipways and the fort’s brickwork greys under relentless rain.
