Curator's note

Indore’s Central Museum, tucked behind the bustling General Post Office on Ashok Bhawan Road, is the city’s only modest excuse for a culture‑stop, and you should treat it as a quick palate cleanser rather than a destination. The two galleries cram everything from stone tools unearthed at Panna to a private collection of 19th‑century miniature paintings, so the narrative jumps from the Paleolithic to the colonial without much breathing room. The standout is the bronze “Vishnu on Garuda” from the Malwa region; it’s worth a linger, though the surrounding cases feel cramped and wilfully dim. Temperatures rise in May‑June; bring a sweater for the air‑conditioned galleries, which sputter on the cheaper side. If you’re on a two‑day Indore sprint, drop the museum at the end of a food‑haul on Sarafa Bazaar – you’ll already be tasting the city’s rhythm and can afford the hour‑long walk without sacrificing jalebi or poha. Skip the upper floor’s textile display; it’s a dusty copy of what you’ll see in the larger Maharaja museum in Gwalior. A budget hotel in the Old Town, such as Hotel 83, gives easy access to both the museum and the night‑market buzz.
