Curator's note

The Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary sprawls over 4 954 km² of the Little Rann of Kutch, a salt‑crusted expanse that only softens between November and March when the scorching heat retreats enough for any wildlife to emerge; the rest of the year is a blistering, mosquito‑filled nightmare. The only sensible base is the modest guesthouse in Dhordo or a heritage haveli in nearby Bhuj, both of which let you catch the pre‑dawn light on the dunes – the moment the endangered Indian wild ass (khur) stalks the salt flats in a thin, dust‑kissed herd. A 4×4 with a knowledgeable local driver is mandatory; the tracks are a maze of cracked earth and seasonal lagoons that will chew through a sedan without a second thought. Skip the mass‑market “big‑group safari” that hovers over the same four viewing points – you’ll waste hours in a noisy convoy while the animals keep to the shadows. Instead, hire a single‑vehicle guide who can ferry you to the lesser‑known Hamirgarh plateau and the Dholavira‑border grasslands, where you’ll also spot chinkara, nilgai and a dazzling array of winter waders. A mid‑morning walk along the salt‑marsh edge can be surprisingly rewarding, but avoid night drives; the terrain is treacherous and the predators are more likely to attack the vehicle than you. Pack ample water, a wide‑brim hat, and sunscreen; the only food you’ll need is a simple Gujarati thali from a roadside dhaba – the experience itself is the real feast.
