Curator's note

Hira Mahal, the unassuming marble pavilion that peers over the eastern wall of the Red Fort, is the only reason to linger beyond the Jama Masjid and the chaotic bazaar of Chandni Chowk. Slip in through the Lahori Gate just after the 10 am crowd thins, cross the reclaimed Mughal garden and you’ll find the lone, restrained archway of Hira Mahal framed by a clean line of chhajjas – a stark contrast to the gold‑leaf excess of nearby structures. The twin, Moti Mahal, was blown to smithereens in 1857, so the surviving pavilion feels almost like a solitary note in an otherwise bombastic symphony. Its 2019 ASI restoration stripped away decades of jungle‑like overgrowth, revealing the fine relief arches that whisper of late‑Mughal minimalism; the marble is now bright enough to be photographed, but the lighting is unforgiving after noon, so aim for the early‑morning slant or the golden hour before sunset when the shadows accentuate the subtle carvings. Entry is included in the Red Fort ticket, but the queue for the main citadel can take 30‑40 minutes; buying a combined skip‑the‑line pass at the gateway saves the hassle. Skip the Viceroy’s House tour – it re‑hashes what you’ve already seen – and head straight to the pavilion’s balcony for a rare, uncrowded vista of the Yamuna and the crumbling Mughal city beyond. Two hours is generous; three lets you sip chai at the nearby tea stall on the fort’s outer wall and watch the changing crowd of tourists and locals alike. November to February is the only sensible window; the heat of May will melt any patience you have for standing under the open arches.
