The Sundarbans’ towering Heritiera fomes, locally called sundri, is the only thing that makes a 200‑kilometre maze of mud and brackish water feel like a forest at all – and it’s worth a dedicated day if you can squeeze it between the tiger‑watch and the mosquito‑load boat rides that dominate any itinerary. Base yourself in Khulna or, if you’re feeling adventurous, the backwater lodge at Sarankhola, then hire a licensed guide from the Forest Department for an early‑morning trek from Godkhali to the central channel; the best light hits the 30‑metre crowns around 09:00, when the mist lifts and the mangrove’s distinctive buttressed trunks frame the water like a green cathedral. Skip the overcrowded entry point at Tilagor – the trees there are already stunted from tourism‑induced trampling – and head for the less‑traveled path near Chandpai, where you’ll still hear the hollow thud of falling fruit (used locally for timber and, alarmingly, still being felled despite the “endangered” tag). Bring a mosquito net for the night‑stay cabin; the heat is oppressive from November to February, but the cooler dry season is the only period when salinity levels allow the sundri to flower, offering a brief, fragile burst of white racemes that makes the whole swamp feel less like a wasteland and more like a dying cathedral worth a respectful, if brief, pilgrimage.
