Curator's note

Hampi is a postcard that fell out of a museum and onto a boulder‑strewn plain, and the experience is as much about stamina as it is about awe. Wake at dawn and head straight to Virupaksha Temple on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra; the incense‑thick courtyard and the 800‑year‑old shikhara are non‑negotiable, and an early visit avoids the midday swarm of day‑trippers. Cross the river by the rickety foot‑bridge to Vittala, where the stone chariot and the musical pillars demand a slow, reverent pace—don’t try to cram it into an hour, the echoing clatter is only impressive when you linger. The bazaar area, a jumble of souvenir stalls and street‑food carts, is worth a quick look for bisi bele bhatta and a coconut water, but it quickly becomes a tourist‑cream‑pie, so skip the souvenir‑laden lanes after lunch. Two days is honest; a third lets you drift to the quieter north side—Hippie Island, the ancient royal stables and the sunset from Matanga Hill, which burns pink over the ruins. Stay in a guesthouse on the riverbank near the Hospet bus terminal for cheap beds and easy ferry access. November to February offers bearable heat; the monsoon turns the boulders slippery and the river churning, while May‑June is a furnace you’ll regret. Skip the “guided night‑tour” that promises ghost stories; the monuments are sobering enough in daylight.
