Curator's note

Hampi demands two days at a minimum, three if you want to linger over the sunset from Hemakuta Hill rather than sprinting between sites. Base yourself in the modest guesthouses along the main road from Hampi Bazaar to the Lotus Mall – they’re cheap, air‑conditioned, and put the bus stop right at your doorstep. Start early at Virupaksha Temple; the chanting monks and brass bells anchor a town that still feels alive despite the crumbling empire around it. From there, a half‑hour walk north brings you to the iconic stone chariot of Vittala Temple, but the real show‑stop is the musical pillars in the pavilion – skip the guided crowd and linger until the sun hits the marble. Cross the Tungabhadra on a rickety ferry to reach the quieter northern side: Hampi Bazaar’s market stalls, the surreal boulder‑strewn landscape of Matanga Hill, and the ruined royal complex of the Queen’s Bath. The river is the natural divide; a midday ferry is the easiest way to hop between the bustling southern bazaar and the more meditative north. Avoid the monsoon months (June‑September) – the paths become slippery and the boulders look more like hazards than scenery. November to February offers cool mornings and clear skies, perfect for climbing the massive monolithic Narasimha statue at sunrise. Skip the overpriced elephant rides; a hired bicycle or a rented scooter costs a fraction and lets you explore at your own pace.
