Gwalior Palace 2

A working-class town redone in marble in the 1700s.

Curator's note

Gwalior’s “Palace 2”, a 1700s marble makeover of what was essentially a working‑class canton, is the kind of off‑beat spectacle you only stumble upon if you ignore the usual forts and head to the western fringe of the city. The best time to go is early March or late October, when the marble glows without the brutal summer glare and the occasional fog softens the crowds. Aim for a mid‑morning slot – 10 am to 11 am – because the guide‑driven tours that start on the hour tend to linger on the decorative cornices while you wait outside in the heat. Slip in through the side gate on Vijaya Bazar Road, skip the official ticket desk and buy a token from a nearby tea stall; the price is the same and you’ll avoid the long line of tourists in souvenir t‑shirts. Inside, make a point of entering the lesser‑known Sheesh‑Mahal before the main hall; the mirrored walls are surprisingly intact and far less photographed than the grand Durbar. Skip the souvenir shop on the ground floor – it’s overpriced plastic trinkets – and instead pop into the adjacent street food stall for a hot aloo‑tikki and chai. Stay until the late afternoon when the fading light reflects off the marble, turning a once‑mundane workers’ quarter into a surprisingly regal tableau.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
